In Brooklyn, eighteen-year-old Deya is starting to meet with suitors. Though she doesn’t want to get married, her grandparents give her no choice. History is repeating itself: Deya’s mother, Isra, also had no choice when she left Palestine as a teenager to marry Adam. Though Deya was raised to believe her parents died in a car accident, a secret note from a mysterious, yet familiar-looking woman makes Deya question everything she was told about her past. As the narrative alternates between the lives of Deya and Isra, she begins to understand the dark, complex secrets behind her community.
Seriously should’ve left some space between books here. This is a heavy read and I did not leave it without some deep introspection.
I felt an immense amount of thankfulness that I live how I do, also a deep amount of pain for the women who don’t have the same opportunities and/or freedoms.
While each woman was painted as victims, it is fitting to me to see that because to themselves, they were. It doesn’t matter how I SEE THEM. Some women do well within their religious and/or tradition “assigned” roles. For those that don’t, they should absolutely be able to redefine their lives by their own choices and morality.
I think tackling religious and/or political topics that are so relevant to us all is difficult because we all have different views and beliefs. For me, but this one really brought out all my emotions and I am so glad to have read it.
